The Filges set with a wooden lucet \/ knitting fork and 50g organic plant-dyed wool yarn in the beautiful colours blue, green, yellow, pink and purple includes everything children need to start knitting!<\/p>\n

The knitting fork, or lucet, is a tool used in cord making and braiding. A traditional and very old crafting tool, the lucet fork has been used for generations dating back to Medieval and Viking periods. The knitting fork is a simple and efficient tool to introduce knitting crafts to children, and even for young children to master the basic principles of knitting.<\/p>\n

The tool is used in\u00a0cord making\u00a0or braiding formed by a series of loops, like spool or finger knitting<\/a>, and, unlike other braiding techniques, lucet braids can be created without pre-measuring threads and so is suited for very long cords.\u00a0The lucet cord is created by making loop-like knots with wool or cotton knitting thread that won\u2019t unravel when cut. It\u2019s an easy and quick way to knit a cord of various thicknesses that can be used for many purposes.\u00a0The Filges wooden lucet \/ knitting fork features two prongs to wind yarn around and to pull through the hole in the handle.<\/p>\n

Knitting is a highly tactile experience and a fun, creative Waldorf<\/a> handwork activity. It is taught in Rudolf Steiner Schools worldwide from around the age of 6 and projects can range from beginner to advanced.<\/p>\n

The craft of knitting has many benefits for children, including the development of fine motor dexterity<\/a>, hand-eye coordination and the concentration and patience required for focused attention on a task. It enhances the ability to understand and follow processes and encourages problem solving skills in overcoming any mistakes.<\/p>\n

The sensorial experience of working with natural fibres creates an active connection to the natural world for both children.
