Iconic to the Montessori classroom, exercising with the\u00a0sandpaper letters is one of a child\u2019s first steps towards literacy. They guide the hand for <a href=\"https:\/\/teiaeducation.ch\/product-category\/learning-themes\/literacy-language\/learning-to-write\/\">writing<\/a> as the child traces the letter shapes in the style and direction that they are written, which should be\u00a0<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">combined with hearing and pronouncing the sound and seeing the symbol<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Each sandpaper letter of the US cursive print is in upper case with the consonants on boards painted pink, and the vowels on boards painted blue. Each board has a space on the left and right for the child to hold it with one hand while tracing the letter with the other.<\/p>\n<p>In the Montessori way of learning letters have both sounds and names.
