Nienhuis Montessori Biology

In the first three years of life, children have absorbed a limitless wealth of impressions, taking in all the elements of the world around them. Among these are a multitude of animals, plants, trees, and flowers – an infinite variety of growing things.

A few simple keys will suffice to animate their inherent love of the natural world around them to stimulate the child’s interest in nature. With this information, this inherent love is transformed into their innate ‘need to know’ and ‘understand it all’.

The child is given the opportunity for sensorial exploration, which is ultimately organised through the Nienhuis Montessori biology Materials. These materials provide them with the names of the animals and their parts, the basic leaf shapes, parts of the leaves, parts of the plants, parts of the flower and so on to help classify and refine the child’s perception. This in turn, creates the foundation for scientific knowledge to be acquired in the years to come.

From the age of 3 to 6 years old the child’s knowledge of science begins by exploring living things, in addition to other scientific topics. Two main topics of biology during early childhood education are botany (the study of plants) and zoology (the study of animals).

From the age of 6 to 12 years old biology is treated consistently with the principles of Cosmic Education. This allows the child to see the natural relationship between life and the earth on which life is sustained. Through the study of plants and animals, the child’s capacity to observe, reason and classify is heightened.
