Knitting is a highly tactile experience and a fun, creative Waldorf handwork activity. It is taught in Rudolf Steiner Schools worldwide from around the age of 6 and projects can range from beginner to advanced.

The craft of knitting has many benefits for children, including the development of fine motor dexterity, hand-eye coordination and the concentration and patience required for focused attention on a task. It enhances the ability to understand and follow processes and encourages problem solving skills in overcoming any mistakes.

Knitting is a calming and satisfying handicraft, providing children with a sense of pride and achievement in their creations too. The sensorial experience of working with natural fibres creates an active connection to the natural world for both children. Knitting is used in both Montessori and Waldorf education and is one of the Waldorf handcrafts.
