Outer Space Cards – 5 Little Bears

Spark your child’s curiosity about space and astronomy with 5 Little Bear’s wonderful collection of handmade wooden outer space cards!

Each wooden card features beautiful coloured images of the Sun, our Moon, and all the planets in our solar system, including the dwarf planet or planetoid Pluto. The cards also include simple yet interesting facts to spark discussion about our universe and the cosmic objects we can see in our skies.

These wooden cards are a great visual tool to promote learning and vocabulary skills, and offer fun and interesting facts about space. They can be used to teach concepts like day and night, the moon, the sun, and the planets.

The set contains 11 wooden cards, each measuring approx. 10 x 14cm. They are entirely handmade in Australia, from sustainably sourced plywood. A wonderful addition to a classroom, home learning or playroom display or a themed learning table!

Learning and play ideas

Individual

Place the cards on a table along with coloured balls or large marbles to represent the planets. Let the child recreate the scene.

Group Setting

Get a child to hold a card behind their back, while the other children guess what planet it is by asking questions for the child to answer.

Get a group of children to each hold a card and organise themselves so they represent the planets’ correct position in terms of distance from the Sun.

Outdoors

See if children can find objects in nature to represent each planet ie, colour, texture, relative size.

Every piece of wood used is slightly different in colour, texture and grain, so there are naturally occurring imperfections seen in the timber (e.g knots, colour changes, etc) which cannot be removed and make the products more sustainable. These pieces of timber are also cut on an engraver and will have slight burnt marks on the edges on some sides, adding to their unique handmade character.
