Imbucare board with knit ball – Nienhuis Montessori

The Nienhuis Montessori square shaped wooden imbucare board with knit ball is part of the infant and toddler material range. The straightforward design of the board purposefully isolates one difficulty with a singular shape, and offers the young child a chance to develop a sense of mastery over a specific skill.

This board consists of a tray with a removable wooden divider board with 1 hole, the bottom of the tray is covered in felt to reduce noise. The child inserts the ball through the hole which makes it ‘disappear’ behind the divider board. This forms new connections within the brain and does not give any further distractions. When a child gains a sense of satisfaction over their accomplishment at successfully placing the shape through the hole, they will be inspired to repeat the process again and again, each time evolving a heightened level of precision whilst marvelling at their newfound abilities.

The imbucare board may also be used by two children: they each sit at one side and ‘pass’ the ball back and forth.

Imbucare is a traditional Montessori material used to develop the concept of object permanence and promotes some of the most fundamental skills to the developing brains of young toddlers.

Practising with the imbucare material provides mental stimulation and exploitative fun. This Montessori material stimulates eye-hand coordination in a focused manner and develops grasp by the young child. It helps the child mastering the various shapes and eventually how to categorise.
