A beautiful Waldorf inspired natural silk storytelling playsilk in the variation Lakota from Sarah’s Silks. This special edition storytelling playsilk was created with the intention of celebrating the beautiful storytelling traditions within Lakota culture. It supports parents and educators in teaching young children respect and reverence for indigenous peoples and traditions, through the universal power of storytelling.
Measuring 53 x 74 centimetres, this playsilk is made from 100% pure mulberry fairly traded silk, hemmed by hand and dyed with non-toxic, eco-friendly dye. It was made in collaboration with Lakota artist and teacher Caroline Stadnick, and comes with an activity card that highlights different Lakota stories and prompts young readers to exercise their own voice and imagination through the power of storytelling. The card also includes a QR code to download stories by Caroline.
The artwork for this playsilk now hangs centrally at the Lakota Waldorf School, an independent, tuition-free school serving children in southwestern South Dakota. The school seeks to cultivate and strengthen Lakota cultural identity and build a solid foundation for Lakota language fluency in its community. 10% of all Lakota storytelling playsilk sales are donated to The Lakota Waldorf School.
This lovely Sarah’s Silks storytelling playsilk is perfect for quiet time, and is a wonderful toy to bring on trips. It packs small and light, and will be enjoyed for many hours as there is always something to new to find!

About Sarah’s Silks
Sarah’s Silks is a family-owned company based in the USA specialising in Waldorf-inspired, natural and sustainable toys to spark babies and children’s imagination. Their mission is to make sustainable, open-ended toys that teach our children to love and care for Mother Earth. The beautiful Sarah’s Silks playsilks, cotton play cloths, capes, fairy dresses, veils, wings, crowns, skirts, dresses, swords, shields, skytails and streamers are perfect for open-ended play, dress-up and dramatic play in Waldorf homes, childcare settings and Steiner schools.
All of Sarah’s Silks silk dress up costumes, silk toys, wooden toys and playsilks are made from high quality sustainable Chinese silk. Each silk product is woven, dyed and hand hemmed by seamstresses working from their home in a small village near Suzhou, China. They are then hand painted and hand finished at the Sarah’s Silks headquarters in Sonoma County, California, USA.
The Sarah’s Silks playsilks are also perfect for wrapping gifts, providing a lovely backdrop for nature and seasonal tables as decoration for birthday parties or applied in rhythmic classes.
Children love the vibrant, beautifully blended colours and soft, tactile feel of the playsilks, cotton play cloths and silk garments. They are made with non-toxic, eco-friendly dyes and natural fibres ranging from 100% real silk to 100% cotton and have passed strict American and European safety testing and are safe for use by children of all ages.
