Sound boxes – Nienhuis Montessori

The Nienhuis Montessori sound boxes are part of the sensorial range of material and help refine auditory senses and practising of sound discrimination in a controlled and engaging way.

This Montessori material encourages grading of sounds and isolates one difficulty as the boxes are identical to each other, though the sound each box makes when shaken is distinctive, varying from very soft to loud.

The set comprises of six wooden sound boxes sealed with a red lid and six with a blue lid with which six pairs have to be made. The child matches each pair by isolating the red sound box they want to match and shake it close to their ear, listening intently for how soft or loud it is. A blue sound box of their choice is also shaken close to their ear to determine if it sounds as the red sound box. This exercise is repeated until the right blue sound box is found and the child places the pair together to indicate a match is made – the process is repeated until six pairs have been made.

This Montessori material is suitable for children aged 3-6 years.
