Double sandpaper letters: French cursive – Nienhuis Montessori
The Nienhuis Montessori French cursive double sandpaper letters (phonograms) are a supplement to the US cursive phonograms and allow the child to explore and understand the intricacies of language. Working with this material develops an understanding of the inconsistencies in French, by giving representative letters to a sound. Exercising with the sandpaper letters is one of a child’s first steps towards literacy, and the sandpaper phonograms are the natural extension. The double sandpaper letters set contains eight wooden boards painted green on which the double sandpaper letters in French cursive print are mounted on, representing “key” sounds (phonograms) not covered by single letters of the alphabet.
The 8 double letter combinations included are:
ou, an, oi, ai, in, é, ch and gn.
The cursive sandpaper letters guide the hand for writing as the child traces the letter shapes in the style and direction that they are written, which should be combined with hearing and pronouncing the sound and seeing the symbol. Each board has a space on the left and right for the child to hold it with one hand while tracing the letters with the other.
In the Montessori way of learning letters have both sounds and names. A presentation of the letters progresses the child through all of the sounds of the letters, followed by presenting the name.
A wooden box to store the cursive sandpaper letters in is also sold separately.
This material is suitable for children aged 3-6 years.
