Globe of land & water: sandpaper – Nienhuis Montessori

The Nienhuis Montessori sandpaper globe of land and water is geography material and provides a sensorial and visual impression of the distribution of the earths land areas and water surfaces and helps the child develop a concept of the shape of the earth. Starting from the principle of Montessori that the whole comes before the parts, the child is first to be offered a world globe. The land areas on this globe are rough, made of sandpaper, the water surfaces are smooth and painted blue. The land and water globe indirectly prepares the child for working with the coloured globe of the continents.

The globe is hand-made and placed on a wooden base which allows the globe to rotate and holds the globe at a 23° angle, the same as the earth’s axis in relation to the sun.
