A modified version of the fifth Froebel gift, Gabe 5b includes round shapes encapsulated in the cube-shaped gift 5. This Goldammer’s box, a connoisseur and admirer of Froebel, can be used in different ways. It cannot form a holistic body unit – like Fröbel’s gifts, but offers many more possibilities for the child to explore and allow for more realistic buildings and structures. This SINA Spielzeug Gabe from the Friedrich Froebel series of wooden playing gifts incorporates more pieces and variety. It divides the cube from Gabe 2 into 12 cubes (25 x 25 x 25mm), 8 hollowed cubes, 12 half cubes and 12 quarter cubes diagonally divided.
To fully understand the whole, the wooden box of Gabe 5b is turned upside down. The box is carefully lifted off, revealing the cube from Gabe 2 now made from half-cubes and quarter-cubes which introduce a triangular shape. This ritual is an important part of play with Gaben 3 through 6 as scattering the blocks will not show the divided cube as a whole at first.
The underlying concept of play with Gabe 5b is of a unity of parts moving through various forms before returning to the whole by repeating the cycle. This idea instills an early understanding for the child’s own life and cycle.
This educational toy is suited for children aged 5 years and up and promotes the logical and orderly development of ideas. Gabe 5b encourages differentiation and symbolic play and develops mathematical skills such as sorting, counting, arithmetic operations, basic understanding of fractions through parts of a whole and enriches vocabulary. It may also be positioned to represent more abstract mathematical concepts such as the Pythagorean Theorem.
Combined together, Gaben 3 through 6 provide the child with all types and shapes of wooden blocks needed for construction, which extends its use from education to a comprehensive and traditional wooden blocks set.
