The geometric solids – Nienhuis Montessori
The Nienhuis Montessori geometric solids introduce the child to solid geometry with a set comprising of ten solid wooden shapes. Working with this material allows the child to understand 3D shapes by making them tangible objects. A key part of the Montessori sensorial curriculum, the solids are all painted blue for isolation purposes, avoiding the child confusing shape with colour.
The shapes include:
– A triangular prism
– A rectangular prism
– A cube
– A cylinder
– A cone
– A triangular pyramid
– A square pyramid
– A sphere
– An ellipsoid
– An ovoid
The geometric solids are Montessori materials that challenge and shape a child’s stereognostic sense, which is the ability to perceive and understand both the form and nature of objects through touch. This leads to an awareness of how shapes form the basis for everyday objects, laying the foundation for future work in geometry. The set of solids can be supplemented with the two-dimensional geometric plane figures to link the three-dimensional geometric solids and the geometric solids basket to store the solids (sold separately).
This material is suitable for children aged 3-6 years.
