The set contains 8 wooden cards, each measuring approx. 10 x 14cm and 1 wooden stand. They are entirely handmade in Australia, from sustainably sourced plywood.

Learning and play ideas

Individual

Children can count the legs and make them into a number activity. How many spots do they have. How many eyes? Or sort and classify the different cards – for example, do they have wings or not?

Group Setting

The anatomy cards are perfect for group discussions. Educators can read a book about bugs then implement these cards in the inside environment for children to extend on their learning and vocabulary of bugs.

Get a child to hold a card behind their back, all other children can guess what bug it is by asking questions for the child to answer.

Outdoors

Have a bug table set up outside and use this as a time to discuss the importance of the role each bug plays in our environment. Children can also take the cards with them on hunt around the garden looking for real life bugs.

Learning Opportunities

Every piece of wood used is slightly different in colour, texture and grain, so there are naturally occurring imperfections seen in the timber (e.g knots, colour changes, etc) which cannot be removed and make the products more sustainable. These pieces of timber are also cut on an engraver and will have slight burnt marks on the edges on some sides, adding to their unique handmade character.
