Sandpaper capitals: international print – Nienhuis Montessori

The set of Nienhuis Montessori sandpaper capitals in international print script is part of the language material range. Iconic to the Montessori classroom, exercising with the sandpaper letters is one of a child’s first steps towards literacy. They guide the hand for writing as the child traces the letter shapes in the style and direction that they are written, which should be combined with hearing and pronouncing the sound and seeing the symbol.

Each sandpaper letter of the international cursive print is in upper case with the consonants on boards painted pink, and the vowels on boards painted blue. Each board has a space on the left and right for the child to hold it with one hand while tracing the letter with the other.
