The second box of colour tablets from Nienhuis Montessori is part of the sensorial material and introduces children to the world of colour and refines the chromatic sense. Following up on the first box of primary colours, the second box adds the secondary colours: green, orange, purple, pink, grey, black, brown and white. Two tablets of the same colour can be matched, building visual discrimination skills while exploring how colours relate to one another.
The tablets are rectangular pieces with wooden ‘handles’ painted in white on the sides, with this contrast making it easier to distinguish colour.
Introduce colour with the tablets in a concrete fashion and without the association of a physical object to avoid confusion, “isolating one difficulty” at a time. After mastering the second box of colour tablets the child progresses to working with the third box of tablets, which then can be further complemented by the colour box of 32 pairs.
