Gry & Sif

Sustainable Danish brand Gry & Sif, specialising in timeless, handmade felt toys and decorative objects, was founded by sisters Gry and Sif. While backpacking in 2001 through Asia, the sisters fell in love with the culture and nature of Nepal. They became captivated by the skills of the local artisans and the traditional felting technique where raw wool is transformed into small works of art. Combining Nepal’s proud craft traditions with Scandinavian design became the idea behind Gry & Sif: a brand practicing Fair Trade principles and representing a universe of magical little stories exuding hygge and warmth.

At Gry & Sif, every product starts its journey in Denmark, and is then crafted through felting, a centuries-old tradition, with natural New Zealand wool in the heart of Nepal. Celebrating this skilled craft, wool is being carded to a soft texture. Then, the wool is gently rubbed and shaped in warm soapy water to bind the fibers together and create a strong felt material. As the damp wool is stretched, it is carefully shaped into the desired figure and finally dried under the hot Nepalese sun.

The addition of embroidery and decorative details by hand by skilled Nepalese artisans is the most detailed and artistic step and brings designs to life and makes each piece unique. This deep respect for craftsmanship ensures that the Gry & Sif products stand out as something special.

The wool used for the Gry & Sif creations comes from New Zealand, where the brand works closely with farmers who follow the guidelines of the New Zealand Animal Welfare Act. This ensures that sheep receive the best possible care and live in conditions that accommodate their natural behaviour and needs.
